How Many Diaper Do I Need For Full-Time Cloth Diapering?

The number of cloth diapers you need depends on a few simple factors — but it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Most families can start small and adjust as they go.

1️⃣ Your baby’s age

Babies go through different numbers of diapers depending on age:

  • Newborns: 10–12 changes per day
  • Older babies & toddlers: 7–10 changes per day

Newborns tend to need more frequent changes, while older babies use fewer diapers but may need more absorbency.

2️⃣ How often you want to wash

How often you plan to do laundry plays a big role in stash size:

  • Washing daily: Smaller stash works well
  • Washing every 2–3 days: You’ll want a larger stash to stay comfortable

There’s no “right” schedule — choose what fits your routine.

3️⃣ The type of cloth diapers you use

Different diaper systems require different quantities:

  • All-in-Two (AI2): Covers can be reused between changes
  • Fitted diapers: Fully absorbent diapers that need a separate cover

Because of this, the number of covers and absorbent pieces will vary.

General Guidelines (Full-Time Cloth)

These recommendations work well for most families cloth diapering full-time.

🌱 All-in-Two (AI2) System

  • 12 covers
  • 20–24 inserts

Covers can be wiped and reused between changes as long as they stay clean and dry.

🌿 Fitted Diapers

  • 20–24 fitted diapers
  • 4–6 covers

Fitted diapers provide absorbency everywhere, while covers are used mainly for naps, bedtime, outings, or a fully waterproof setup.

🍃All-in-One (AIO) Diapers

  • 20–24 diapers

Each diaper is a full change system and needs to be washed after every use.

🌻 Pocket Diapers

  • 20–24 diapers

Like AIOs, pockets are a full change system and are washed after each use.

☀️Flat Diapers

  • 20–24 flats
  • 12 covers

Flats are folded absorbent diapers used with a separate waterproof cover. Covers can be reused between changes if they stay clean and dry.

Helpful notes

These numbers are guidelines — many families start smaller, mix cloth with disposables, or adjust over time based on their routine and baby’s needs.

Start small if you’re unsure

If you’re new to cloth diapering, it’s completely okay to start with a smaller stash and build over time.

Your routine, baby, and preferences will guide what works best for your family.
